World Championship Wrestling - 9/16/89 - featured the debut of Jim Cornette as the new regular play-by-play commentator, alongside Jim Ross; included footage from the finish of the Steiners vs. Freebirds match at the Clash of the Champions and the post-match confusion over who tripped Scott Steiner; featured footage from the Clash of Terry Funk attacking NWA World Champion Ric Flair, trying to suffocate him with a plastic bag, and bending his branding iron across Sting's leg; included Ross conducting an interview with Funk - his arm in a sling - and Gary Hart, during which he read a telegram from Executive Vice President Jim Herd in which Herd said Funk's attack would not be tolerated and Funk was suspended indefinately and fined $100,000; Funk and Hart then argued that they were simply fighting back after Flair hospitalized Funk and put his arm in a sling; featured Paul E. Scott Steiner (w/ Rick Steiner & Robin Green) pinned Gene Ligon with a belly to belly suplex at 4:58; during the bout, Rick held a young boy in his arms who wore amateur wrestling headgear like Rick's; it was announced that the replay of the Clash would air the following day at 1:20 p.m. EST; after the match, Ross conducted an interview with the Steiners and Green regarding their loss to the Freebirds at the Clash, during which Scott said the Freebirds should consider themselves lucky and then looked at Green while saying he would never, ever trip again

Tommy Rich fought Dick Murdoch to a 15-minute time-limit draw at 14:11; prior to the bout, it was announced ring announcer Rhubarb Jones had been named Billboard's large market country music DJ of the year; after the match, the two men shook hands; following the commercial break, footage was shown of Rich's match at the Clash against NWA US Champion Lex Luger, followed by Ross conducting an interview with Rich about the match; during the segment, Rich thanked the crowd for their support and said he would eventually take the US title and would do it for the young fans
Brian Pillman pinned Bob Cook with a crossbody off the top at 4:33; prior to the bout, footage was shown of the Pillman / Eddie Gilbert match from the previous week in which Pillman won with Air Pillman when the referee didn't notice Gilbert's foot was outside the ring; Pillman signed several autographs on his way out to the ring; moments later, Gilbert appeared, praised Pillman, and then challenged him to a rematch for the following week, with Pillman quickly accepting
Sid Vicious & Dan Spivey (w/ Teddy Long) defeated Tim Parker & Luis Astia at 1:34 when Spivey pinned Parker with two hands on his chest after the powerbomb; during the bout, Cornette briefly left the commentary table and Long filled in to cut a promo on the Road Warriors
